5th Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series 2017: Recognizing Best Researches: A Colloquium on Philippine Libraries & Librarianship

The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians, Inc. (PAARL) held its 5th Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series (MGDLS) 2017 last December 4, 2017 at the Main Library Lobby, Gonzales Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

This leg of the MGDLS, with the theme “Recognizing Best Researches: A Colloquium on Philippine Libraries & Librarianship”, recognized the best research papers submitted to PAARL in 2017. It also served as a platform for the authors to present their works to the public for free.

Ms. Claire F, Pascua, PAARL Board of Director, opened the program by leading the singing of the national anthem and invocation. This was immediately followed by the opening remarks by PAARL President, Ms. Ana Maria B. Fresnido.

The colloquium had two speakers. The first speaker was Ms. Evelyn P. Nabus. Chief Librarian of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Calamba. She presented a very informative paper entitled “Text Messaging: Not Only for Reference Service”.  She highlighted the possible uses of text messaging, which in their case, is not limited to reference service only. In fact, according to Ms. Nabus, this technology can be applied for other purposes in libraries.

The paper entitled: “Facebook and Librarians: A Content Analysis of Facebook Pages of Professional Organizations in the Philippines” was presented by Ms. Janice D. C. Peñaflor, the Acquisitions Librarian and Technical Services Coordinator of De La Salle University Libraries. This paper was co-written with Mr. Philip Mark D. Daiz, Assistant Librarian at Laguna Bel-Air Science High School.  Ms. Peñaflor discussed the results of their study on how professional library organizations in the Philippines use Facebook to communicate with their members. Their study also highlighted the extent of interactions between the organizations and their members by utilizing various metrics.

The paper presentations were followed by an open forum giving an opportunity for the participants to ask questions or clarifications. Mr. Chito N. Angeles, PAARL Vice-President and Conference Chair, concluded the program with his closing remarks.

Both papers presented are available in the 2017 issue of the PAARL Research Journal- an open access journal. Indeed, there are more to look forward to for the next MGDLS in the years to come.
